Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
    Episode 5 Safety first!
SK Incheon Petrochem's emergency response system:

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem!
I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Hello, I'm Park Ji-soo, the host of the 3-minute Talk Talk.

You never know when or how a safety incident will happen.
That's why it's so important to strictly follow safety practices and inspections to prevent accidents.
Nevertheless, in the case where an unexpected incident happens, it's important to be prepared to respond quickly and minimize the damage.
You need to respond in the nick of time to prevent a bigger crisis.
SK Incheon Petrochem has established and operates an advanced emergency response system for swift and accurate action in the event of an emergency.
Following emergency response procedures, each member does their part and acts quickly, from reporting to the initial response, communicating the situation, and taking further actions.
We also have a graded emergency response organization for each incident type and size.
A solid foundation for emergency response, our very own fire department.
SK Incheon Petrochem has 16 dedicated firefighters who work around the clock in four groups and three shifts.
Dedicated firefighters go through a systematic training program at Fire School, a specialized fire training center in Texas, and undergo daily dispatch and operation training. So, they are as specialized in responding to oil fires as regular firefighters.
We select and operate our own 82 firefighters among our members to assist the dedicated firefighters in their duties, and they participate in regular drills once a month.
In addition, we conduct company-wide joint emergency response drills with all members of the plant to secure on-site response and execution capabilities according to imaginary scenarios.
SK Incheon Petrochem is building its own advanced firefighting facilities for rapid incident response.
We have a total of five fire engines, including two high-performance aerial-rescue-ladder chemical fire engines, and one high-performance chemical fire engine. We are also equipped with 75 water spraying facilities in major facilities such as compressors and pumps.
We have a total of eight fire pumps and a total of 44,000 tons of firefighting water stored in four tanks in the process area and one tank in the dock area. We also have installed the industry's first 32-meter-high, 360-meter-long protective wall (in consultation with residents) outside the process area adjacent to the nearby residential area.
Not only that, we have established a solid cooperation system with related organizations to respond effectively to disasters and incidents in the local community.
We regularly conduct public-private joint emergency drills with Incheon Metropolitan City and Incheon Seobu Fire Station. By signing firefighting response agreements with local organizations such as the Incheon Seobu Fire Station, POSCO ENERGY, and GS Caltex, we enhance the response system to oil fires and chemical accidents in the local community.
SK Incheon Petrochem will continue to upgrade the emergency response system so local residents can rest assured about safety.

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Episode 4 SK Incheon Petrochem's odor management system:

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Hello, I'm Park Ji-soo, the host of the 3-minute Talk Talk.

When you think of an oil company, you probably think of the distinctive smell of oil.
You know, the kind of smell that spread throughout the classroom when the oil stove was heated at school, or the kind of smell you'd smell at the gas station.
But if you've ever visited SK Incheon Petrochem, you might think differently.
Given our proximity to a residential neighborhood, we meticulously control odor of the business site.
SK Incheon Petrochem has installed and operates a facility to eliminate odors and volatile organic compounds, in other words, VOCs, generated in our processing, storage, and shipping facilities.
The facility removes and retrieves over 98% of odors and VOCs.
The entire process, from unloading crude oil at the dock to processing it to shipping it back as a finished product, is done through closed facilities and piping.
In particular, we are the first domestic refinery that built a closed drainage system for the entire process.
In addition, we installed fully closed, double-sealed sampling equipment and in-process pumps, and implemented a fugitive emissions leakage detection and quantification program (LDAR) for periodic measurements and inspections.
There’s more. At our onshore and offshore shipping facilities, we have installed vapor recovery units (VRUs) to collect vapors to minimize VOCs that may be emitted during product shipment.
We have also installed and been operating an adsorption tower that uses activated carbon as a filter in the process to filter out substances emitted into the air.
Plus, we thoroughly control odors by sealing the wastewater treatment plant facility, introducing various environmental facilities such as regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTO) that remove VOCs by burning them at high temperatures, and conducting periodic inspections.
But despite these efforts, individual companies can't solve all the unexplained odor problems in their neighborhoods.
That is why we take the lead in building a safer and cleaner local environment and creating social value in the environmental field by sharing our odor control technology and expertise with local communities and continuously participating in various environmental improvement activities.
And, of course, we will continue our efforts to mitigate the odor to ensure that residents can rest assured about odor issues.

Hope I answered all your questions about SK Incheon Petrochem! Again, I'm Park Ji-soo. Bye!

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Episode 3 The myths and truths about the white smoke. How does SK Incheon Petrochem manage air pollution?

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Hello, I'm Park Ji-soo, the host of the 3-minute Talk Talk.

If you look at the SK Incheon's Petrochemical plant, you can see white smoke coming out from all over the facilities.
Especially during the winter, you can see the even bigger smoke emitted into the air,
but is it harmful? Of course, not!
    This white smoke is steam.
Just like how you can see your breath when exhaling in the winter, this steam is created
by the temperature difference between the air in the atmosphere and the plant facility.
This phenomenon is called white smoke.
Then, how does SK Incheon Petrochem control air pollution?
At SK Incheon Petrochem, the main substances emitted into the air are from furnaces and boilers.
The process of burning fuel at both facilities produces sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) along with fine dust. SK Incheon Petrochem makes great efforts to minimize the emission of these substances.
First, we switched the fuel we use in our furnaces and boilers to LNG, an eco-friendly and clean fuel, which dramatically reduced our sulfur oxides (SOx) and fine dust emissions.
Secondly! We minimized emissions by installing ultra-low-NOx burners that reduce the nitrogen oxide (NOx) generation and operating an exhaust gas denitrizer that removes nitrogen oxides through a catalytic reaction.
Thirdly! We continue to reduce air emissions by minimizing fuel use through heat exchange network optimization, which is done by recovering heat sources used in the process and supplying them to other facilities.
Through these efforts, SK Incheon Petrochem reduced dust emissions by more than 90% compared to 2006, and sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by more than 70 to 90% compared to 2008, respectively, as of 2019. We continue to thoroughly control them by introducing our own standards that are stricter than the legally permissible standards.
You can see such efforts of SK Incheon Petrochem with your own eyes
through the TMS, an automatic smokestack measuring system, and air quality display boards.
Air emission data is transmitted in real-time to Incheon City Hall, Seo-gu Office, and the Korea Environment Corporation through the TMS installed on the smokestack
This information is also displayed publicly on an electronic board at the main entrances.

Hope I answered all your questions about SK Incheon Petrochem! Again, I'm Park Ji-soo. Bye!

Episode 2 All about the flare stack, a must-have eco-friendly installation!:

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Hello, I'm Park Ji-soo, the host of the 3-minute Talk Talk.

415, Bongsu-daero, Seo-gu, Incheon, Korea. It's where SK Incheon Petrochem's plant is located.
But what's that tall tower-like facility? It's a safety facility called a flare stack.
People easily mistake that this emits harmful gases, but actually, it’s the opposite.
A flare stack is an eco-friendly and safety facility that must be installed in refineries and petrochemical plants to completely burn and discharge gases from the process in a harmless and clean manner.
It is very important to keep the pressure inside the pipes in petrochemical plants constant pressure for safety,
because all processes are connected by closed piping.
If the pressure rises due to gases generated during the process, the safety valve automatically opens, and the gas is vented through the flare stack for complete combustion in a harmless state to the environment.
Think of a pressure rice cooker.
The weight at the top of the pressure rice cooker controls the pressure by automatically moving and releasing steam when inside the cooker reaches a certain pressure level.
The flare stack is like the weight in a pressure cooker.
Another misconception about flare stacks! It is about the flame and white smoke at the top of the flare stack.
Those flames and smoke are not dangerous.
The flame is responsible for safely and completely burning the emitted gases,
and what looks like white smoke is actually not smoke, but harmless steam, or water, that is injected to help with the complete combustion of the outgoing gases.
Nevertheless, SK Incheon Petrochem has been striving to manage stable flare stack operations to minimize residents’ anxiety and inconvenience.
We are making various efforts, such as dramatically reducing the amount of gas emitted and minimizing the size of the flame by conducting a full investigation and improvement of all piping valves and introducing a 24-hour management system through surveillance cameras.
Our flare stack management practices have been recognized as exemplary practices that other companies come to us to learn.
You only need to remember two things about the flare stack:
One, the flare stack is a safety facility that keeps the pressure in the process constant, much like the weight in a pressure cooker, and two, the flame and white smoke from the flare stack completely burns the emissions to make them harmless to the environment!

Episode 1 What does SK Incheon Petrochem do?

Everything you want to know about SK Incheon Petrochem! I will tell you all you would like to know in three short and sweet minutes.
Hello, I'm Park Ji-soo, the host of the 3-minute Talk Talk.

    At 415, Bongsu-daero, Seo-gu, Incheon, Korea,
you'll find countless tall chimneys and facilities, working hard without a break.
What goes on in this place?
It is the company I work for, SK Incheon Petrochem.
Founded in 1969 as Korea's third oil refinery, SK Incheon Petrochem, Korea’s top oil refinery and petrochemical company, is the only oil refinery and petrochemical company located in the Seoul metropolitan area and plays a central role in stably supplying energy to the metropolitan area, including Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi-do.
In short, we produce petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and LPG for automobiles.
Because Korea does not produce crude oil, we import crude oil from the Middle East or the United States and refine it to produce petroleum products.
The refinement of crude oil typically takes place in a facility called a crude distillation unit (CDU), where fractional distillation is used to separate components based on differences in their boiling points.
At the lowest temperature, the light LPG is separated, and gasoline, naphtha, kerosene, diesel, and heavy oil are produced in order. The heavier residues, such as asphalt, remain until the end.
Additionally, naphtha, a basic raw material for petrochemicals produced in this process, is used to manufacture petrochemical products like para-xylene, a raw material for PET bottles and synthetic fibers.
Over 50% of the oil and petrochemical products produced in this process at SK Incheon Petrochem are exported to countries including China, Japan, and the US.
SK Incheon Petrochem is a leading exporter in South Korea, as evidenced by the fact that petroleum products ranked third in the largest export item in 2019.
As a major local company that has grown alongside Incheon for over 50 years,
we are leading the way in creating various social values, including support for the socially disadvantaged, social contributions specialized in education, and the 1% Happiness Sharing Fund, which is operated through voluntary donations from members.
